NRW Academy Welcomes Two New Members from the University of Bonn NRW Academy Welcomes Two New Members from the University of Bonn

A special honor: Prof. Wulf Amelung was admitted to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. This makes him one of ten new members that the Academy will welcome in 2024. The newly admitted researchers and artists have extraordinary expertise in their fields: this year they range from Jewish studies to soil science and photography. The ceremonial admission to the traditional institution takes place today as part of the Academy's annual celebration.

Wulf Amelung has been Director of the Jülich Institute of Agrosphere since 2011 and has taught general soil science and soil ecology at the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Bonn since 2004. He is a member of the PhenoRob Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bonn. The scientist deals with questions relating to nutrient cycles in soils, soil degradation and the behavior of pollutants in soils.

Amelung was listed as a “Highly Cited Researcher” in 2021 and 2018, making him one of the world's most frequently cited scientists. The soil researcher's most recent awards include the Emil Ramann Medal of the German Soil Science Society, which he received in 2019. Wulf Amelung was admitted to the Leopoldina in 2022.

The North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts was established in 1970 and has been the sole academy in Germany to incorporate the arts alongside the sciences since 2008. It only accepts the very best researchers and artists among its members, who engage in scientific and academic dialogue with one another and exchange ideas and opinions with research and cultural institutions in Germany and further afield. Only figures who “have distinguished themselves through scientific or artistic achievements,” in the words of its articles of association, are eligible for election. The academy currently has around 280 full and almost 130 corresponding members.
